Entertainment and Culture
There’s never a dull moment in the hanseatic city of Hamburg: The imposing harbour, the River Alster with lots of romantic canals define the maritime urban landscape. Hamburg’s more modern side can be seen in the booming Hafen City, side-by-side with the traditional Speicherstadt and the bustling fish market. Beyond the city, the North Sea and the Baltic coast with its idyllic countryside draws those who are looking for a relaxing weekend. For those after a little more excitement, you will find everything a young heart could desire in the in-scene parts of town “Schanze”, Ottensen and St. Pauli: fancy boutiques, trendy cafés and clubs, culinary specialities from Portuguese cake to “Fischbrötchen” – a bread roll filled with pickled herring and onions. Come night time, it’s time to head for the “Kiez”, the party strip in the city which never sleeps. Hamburg provides cultural entertainment too with an overwhelming daily programme of international musicals, avant-garde theatre, opera and ballet. Apart from high art and photography, there is the quirky and bizarre to be discovered in the museums as well; spices, coffee, shipping and erotic art to name but a few. Sports enthusiasts can enjoy water sports and other events (marathon, triathlon, HSH Nordbank Run) and the extensive sports facilities in Hamburg University.
