Classical narrative cinema, fictional stories, and the documentary gaze

The MHMK programme Film and Television B.A.

Film-makers are story-tellers. They give visual form to the themes which touch us as humans. They create pictures and dialogue and build up intense, atmospheric moods for the viewer. Whether they’re scriptwriters, cameramen or cutters, their work always involves artistry. But the art of film-making also requires a high level of expertise, technical know-how and project management skills. Film-makers are all-rounders who take responsibility and organize themselves, from the initial idea right through to distribution.

The comprehensive course of study at MHMK gives you the best possible preparation for finding and claiming your individual place in the world of film and television. We deliberately emphasize the strengths of traditional narrative cinema, fictional and documentary perspectives and forms. Feature film, documentary or short film, advert, video clip or music clip – the Bachelor of Arts qualification comprising scriptwriting, cinematography, post-production, production and directing opens all possible options to you.

The university is not just a place for learning. Practical exercises, an intensive exchange of ideas with real industry professionals, and high-quality workshops on special topics are as important to us as teaching theoretical principles. That’s what students really appreciate about MHMK.

The director of the programme is Prof. Mathias Allary.

Order of study

The Film and Television study programme is a fusion of several classical forms of art, design and communication. These make up the content of the 7-semester programme of study at MHMK, which combines broad theoretical subject knowledge with practical film-making skills, and always emphasizes the latest developments in the industry.

In the first few semesters all students do the same basic courses, giving you the opportunity to find your personal role in the film team and work out which aspect of the profession appeals to you most.

You then develop your individual profile in one of the following fields of study: script-writing, directing, cinematography, post-production and production.

Numerous seminars and projects transcending subject boundaries ensure that even in your advanced studies you’ll get a broad perspective and interdisciplinary experience. A fixed component of the curriculum and a real highlight of the third semester is a two-week filming workshop. Our students learn directly in the studio rather than in the lecture theatre. Experienced professionals are there to support them – from the planning stage right to the critical analysis of the finished product.

The sixth semester leads you straight into practice, offering you the opportunity to directly apply and test the knowledge acquired in your studies for nearly five months. You decide yourself where and in what business.

The programme is offered in German. English-speaking students are very welcome, however. You can find more detailed information and a selection of films on the German-language website of MHMK.
