Before taking up her professorship at the Macromedia University, graduate designer Prof. Tanja Schmitt-Fumian taught and researched at the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK). As a project manager, she was primarily responsible for industry partnerships and research projects.

Background of Tanja Schmitt-Fumian

Among other things, she developed the new cross-media ‘e-tale’ advertising format in conjunction with Swisscom. At the ZHdK Institute for Design and Technology, she focused on design research, particularly with regard to mobile devices. In conjunction with the M + M group of artists and Vodafone R & D, in 2006 she implemented one of the first DVB-H films for mobile. This premiered at the 2006 Munich Film Festival and was shown at the Ars Electronica in Austria in 2007.

In her design research, Prof. Schmitt-Fumian deals with the issue of modern communication strategies. She has a proven track record in speaking and has talked at events such as the “Mannheim Masters” series at Mannheim University of Applied Sciences, the HFF Film Academy in Berlin, the “Media Future Day” Zurich, the Tweakest “Visions of Digital Life Style” in Zurich and the ACM (SIGCHI International Conference on Advances in Computer Entertainment Technology) in Hollywood, USA. Between 1999 and 2005 she was the managing director of a design agency in New York. Since 2005, she has been involved in strategic design consulting with her husband Markus Schmitt-Fumian.

Prof. Schmitt-Fumian studied product design and media technology at the University of Design Karlsruhe (HfG) and Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), USA. She has been a jury member at international awards (including Interactive Media Design Review, ID Magazine, New York), won numerous awards including Art Directors Club Bronze and IF Communication Design Award, German Prize for Communications Design, and taught Interaction Design at international universities.
