Occupational career and development:
Ever since I can remember, I have been always interested in Design and Arts. It’s always been the fascination of the interaction of products, colours and its communication, which caught me most. During my A-Levels the only possibility to get a chance to look into the field of Design as a professional education was the school internship. Doing it in a Graphic Design agency my preference for design became much more clear. However life changes. With doing an accommodation job in a packaging company I realised pretty soon, that there is a great difference between being just the Designer – at that time it meant creating nice and beauty things, the surface – or being the developer of new things, being the person responsible for the process behind every new product. This perception motivated me to challenge myself. I enrolled in a total different study programme: Paper and Packaging Manufacturing Technology in Munich. Doing a diploma in engineering meant struggling with chemistry, physics and other technical courses. But that was what I wanted. I wanted to understand the whole process behind developing a new packaging, wanted to understand the interaction of materials and the maths behind. Surely, I would not have been the right programme for me without having a combination to Design. I specialized in Packaging Design, but still it was a technical education, which I also realized, in both practical internships.

With finishing my Diploma the shifting educational regulation to Bachelor and Master degrees offered me the way for a second education without meaning to study for 5 years again. Knowing that I covered the necessary background education I looked for suitable Design Master programmes. I could have gone to Stuttgart, where totally matching Master programmes is offered. Doing the same things again, just deepen the graphical skills based on packaging didn’t seem enough for me. I looked up for the next challenge.

That’s how I came to the MHMK. The possibility to study an interdisciplinary programme, matching the theoretical attempt of Design with managerial aspects caught my interests. Starting all over needs courage, but a great motivation to extend your own horizon is even more important. Enrolling to Media and Design (M.A.) meant leaving the technical education and the field of packaging behind me. I am glad I did it. With having almost fulfilled my Master’s degree I can say, that this programme offered me so many insights on different things, I changed my perspective totally and I am even ready for future challenges.

Starting the Master’s 2 years ago, I was pretty sure I would combine my previous education with the Service Design field in terms of my thesis. But again, learning means challenging yourself. Due to the great education concept of the MHMK, having small classes, doing a reality based project every semester and the variety of covered topics, I decided for a more critical topic, which combines more than just Packaging and Design. This programme offers you new thoughts and perspectives on what Design really is. In the future I want to keep extending my horizon, I want to keep discovering new fields of interests. As a consequence I do not see myself in a plain packaging company anymore. The study projects showed me how great it is to counsel different companies in terms of Service Design. For me, Service Design and a user-centred working process are the fields I will somehow working with. Consultants are mostly seen in the managerial business field but there is a way to do it being a Service Designer as well.

Herbert Simon says, “Design is changing existing situation into preferred ones” – So do I.
